SafeRide is a safety-oriented free transportation service offered to those needing rides from Sigma Rho (Chassell, MI) to and from Houghton and surrounding communities. This service is primarily for students, staff, friends of Sigma Rho, and maybe faculty - if we have your class and mid term or final exams are just around the corner. Honestly though, this is a legitimate service and our members take this seriously. They are cell phone equipped, valid licensed, and sober drivers with insured vehicles. All SafeRide drivers are members of Sigma Rho and have passed no extensive background checks and have received no sexual harassment, diversity, or crime-prevention training. SafeRide drivers do not wear chauffeur caps or uniforms, so no sense asking to see it.
The Purpose of SafeRide
- Provide a safer environment in and around the Chassell area.
- Provide a safe ride home for MTU students and their guests.
- Provide an alternative ride home for students in potentially threatening situations.
- Reduce the potential harmful consequences of alcohol and other forms of drug abuse.
- Prevent a student from driving while intoxicated, as we all know the consequences and the dangers this can cause others.
Policies to Ride
- No alcohol of any kind (in open or closed containers).
- No pets. Unless we decide it’s a fitting suitor for one of our pets.
- You are required by law to wear a seat belt when the SafeRide vehicle is in motion.
- If you damage the vehicle, you will be billed for the repairs, with payment due by sunrise.
- You have the obligation to treat the SafeRide drivers with courtesy and respect.
- You have the right, and we are serious here, to be driven in a safe manner and be treated with courtesy and respect. It’s the Sigma Rho way.
- You MUST supply at least two good jokes and the ability to deliver a convincing punch line. If not, we stop - and you walk.
- We reserve the right to deny transport to any passenger if, in the judgment of the driver, the passenger’s behavior is a danger to the vehicle’s performance, the driver, other passengers, or if you’re just flat out embarrassing to be seen with.
- By entering one of the Sigma Rho member’s vehicles, you agree to abide by these policies. Those who violate them will be denied service. We will also call your significant other and your parents to explain you’re not actually studying, like you told them earlier.
Hours of Operation
We will make ourselves available, within reason, most any time of any day to help you out. However, this is primarily for weekend nights and during various events held at Sigma Rho or MTU.
