| The
Delta Chapter of Sigma Rho was chartered in 1927, the initiation, and
installation were held on May10, 1927 at the Silver Bow Club, in Butte,
Montana. The initiation was conducted by local members of other chapters
of the fraternity. They were R.J. Studer (Beta) and H.P. Sherman (Beta) of
Butte, R.S.Oliver (Alpha) of Anaconda, and Isaac Roscoe Cornell (Alpha) of
Dillon. (Delta Chapter Charter Members)
The chapter was active on the campus of Montana School of Mines until 1982, when it folded. The chapter house was sold, and the money was placed into a scholarship fund at Montana Tech. (See Also: Additional Delta Chapter History) In 1998 a brother, Ken Liston RN, # 487 Delta, returned to Montana Tech, and started inquiring of the status of the chapter, and its' demise. Some of the brothers had asked Liston to find out what was going on with the money, who was receiving the scholarship, etc. He found that the funds were being used as a recruiting tool to entice students to attend Tech. When he reported that to the alumni brothers, they suggested that he attempt a resurrection of the chapter, and have the scholarship be awarded to an active member. The rest is history. On May 10, 2000, seventeen pledges, and four faculty advisors were initiated into membership as Delta Chapter of Sigma Rho Fraternity. The initiation ceremony, and installation of the officers took place 200 ft. underground in the Missoula Adit, on the the Butte Hill, by light from carbide lamps. Members performing the initiation ceremony were Steve Monniger (Delta) Livingston MT, W. Chris van Laer (Delta) Butte, MT, and Brother Liston (Delta). (See Also Ken's Letter to the Delta Chapter Pledges) The new officers of the chapter are Andy Hadden, Lewistown MT, Archon; Ken Fossum, Ophiem, MT, Vice Archon; Russell Sheets, Scoby, MT, Treasurer; Tom McMillan, Lewistown, MT, Scribe; Jason Gauer, Lewistown MT and Tye Lasich, Twin Bridges MT, Scholarship Committee chairs. Additionally, Justin Gregory, Glasgow, MT, was the past Scribe. The chapter is enthusiastic, motivated, and will have oversight with the advisors, and the up coming Delta Chapter Alumni Association. Expansion to other mining schools has been discussed, with the resurrection of the Beta (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), and Gamma (University of Kentucky, Lexington) Chapters the initial goals.
